Not-superb BGs on a superb train journey

On today’s series of six trains through Fukushima and Yamagata Prefectures in Japan, my blood sugar was pretty up and down.

Varied is good when you’re talking about scenery; not so good when it’s BGs.

Breakfast

I woke up and was already a bit high around 8 am in my hotel in Aizu-Wakamatsu: 207. A good insulin shot, breakfast buffet, and walk to the station didn’t really help. The post-breakfast spike was in the mid 200s and required a corrective Humalog shot on board.

It worked. Around 11 am I was finally below 200 and by the time of my late lunch around 2:30 pm, I was 111.

Somehow though, a big spike followed and haunted the rest of the journey.

A few hours later, I arrived at my final stop, Sakata, and checked into my hotel. At 6 pm I checked and the CGM said 279. I was so surprised that I verified it with my Japanese finger-stick meter, which was 251.

Pretty much the same, given the margin of error. Sighing, I found a convenience store dinner and took a significantly large shot for it all. That did better; in the evening I was under 200 the entire time and was about 130 through the night.

And, it was a CGM sensor-changing night; two weeks starts now. Maybe with the new one will come new diabetic luck…?
