BG Report: Walking around Kurayoshi, Japan

Today was spent in the small city of Kurayoshi, in Tottori Prefecture on the northern coast of central Honshū. Not only was the weather perfect for my wanderings along an old, abandoned train line, and seeing the intact white storehouses of old town Kurayoshi, but my blood sugars were well-behaved as well.

Hotel room breakfast

I didn’t actually check my BG when I woke up in my hotel room this morning. Earlier, at 4 am, I’d woken up for some reason and checked then; it was 108. I could tell that it was still good when I got up around 8 am for the day; I ate the doughnut and yogurt and coffee in my room that I bought from the 7-11 yesterday.

BG check on a bamboo table in the forest

After riding a local bus out to the edge of town and wandering the train tracks of the abandoned Kurayoshi Line, I sat and checked. This was an especially nice BG check – sitting on a bamboo bench, using a tiny table made of bamboo, in a bamboo forest beside an ultra-scenic old disused railway! Best of all, my BG was 125. Since I was still walking around, I had a bit of glucose in the form of Calorie Mate bars.

I rode the bus back to town and went looking for a place to eat lunch. What I got was more than I bargained for – a full and varied set meal, with tempura as the main feature and all sorts of little side dishes to go with it. And a lot of rice. As shamisen music played on a nearby speaker, I took my Humalog shot though my jeans at the table and hoped it would balance well with the walking I’d done, and would be doing after lunch.

I did wander around Old Town for a couple hours, and when I got back to my hotel, I was 195. A bit high, but really, kind of where I’d want it after all that.

Convenience store dinner: cold soba, vegetables, and a beer

A little later at dinner time I was 154, and after my in-room convenience store dinner (again), I was 104 before bed. In many ways, I’d call that a pretty perfect day.
