BG ups and downs in Niimi and Ikura Cave

Breakfast walloped my blood glucose today, but thankfully it was short-lived. On a day of exploring the city of Niimi and going into spooky Ikura Cave, the real story was one of fighting lows, if anything.

The hotel in Niimi provided a prepared breakfast, not a buffet. It was excellent, but with a large bowl of rice, a bit tough to deal with. Especially because my BG had been trending slightly high all night, unusually.

I had my shot and ate the meal, but a little while later the spike was more prominent than is usual or acceptable: 284. I took a couple of corrective Humalog units and set off to start my cave walk.

Ikura Cave is a couple stations away from Niimi station, and as I arrived and began my walk through the cave I was down to 236. Much better and still heading to the good zone.

The cave walk itself took about 50 minutes and there were lots and lots of steps inside. It was a good workout, and by the time I got back to Niimi station and began exploring the streets there, I was 85.

I had some glucose and continued my walk, but the lows weren’t quite done. Back in my hotel room later I was a mere 62, so I had more glucose and actual food.

Still, the day wasn’t done: a bit later I was still only 75, on the low side of normal. So I carefully monitored it and corrected where I needed to.

By dinner time – another convenience store in the room meal – I had gotten low yet again, in the 60s. So I started eating and took a late shot towards the end of the meal.

That pretty much did it. There was no dinner spike, and by midnight I was down to 80 so I had a bit more glucose and went to sleep. All through the night, it was fine and stable.

Went low in Niimi twice today – literally, in the cave, and diabetes-wise on my CGM.
