How to kill a day off in Belgrade, Serbia

DAY 93 –

Today, Masayo woke up not feeling well, and didn’t want to leave. So we spent all day sitting in our room in Belgrade, Serbia. She knitted and rested, while I worked on some technical issues on t1dwanderer.com.

My BG at 8 am — after being 73 just before bed after a large rice-filled dinner — was 272. Again, unaccountably high. My least favorite kind of high. Breakfast was cookies and yogurt, and I shot up my Humalog dutifully.

We worked all morning, neither of us leaving the room. At lunch time, I went out by myself and found some simple things to eat at a bakery and a grocery store. My BG when I got back was 224 — fair enough, since I’d sat around doing nothing since breakfast. I shot up again and ate my chocolate croissants and banana.

Later, at 6:45 pm, I checked and was almost exactly the same as before lunch: now 222. I was a little annoyed at this one, but, again, I’d sat around getting zero exercise all day. I went out, again by myself, to find dinner.

I managed to get some takeaway pizza from a place called Carabic for us, and I also picked up a can of beer for myself from a store. We ate it in the room together, and Masayo decided she felt good enough to do some laundry.

Interestingly, we had a washing machine in our room but no soap, and couldn’t find any for under $5 at the store. Too expensive for a mere load or two. So we’d bought a bar of laundry soap for $1, which Masayo grated with a cheese grater to turn into usable soap. Is that genius, or what?

And it worked: she did the laundry with it, and hung the clothes on a rack near the room heater to dry overnight.

At 10 pm I checked to see what the pizza and beer had done: I was 113. O perfection! I left it alone and we went to sleep. Masayo said she still didn’t feel that great but promised she would tomorrow. I think she just needed a day of complete nothing for once. Looking forward to seeing some of Belgrade tomorrow!
