BG report: Wild day hiking in Kasagi, Kyōto

Today was a tale of a challenging morning schedule with respect to insulin shots, and how the power of walking a lot keeps blood glucose readings down.

Usually I take my breakfast bolus and my daily basal together, in the morning when I first wake up. Today though, step one was catching a train. Breakfast was on-board: coffee and a doughnut I’d just bought at a convenience store.

So around 8:30 am, I took my Humalog in my train seat for that. It was only when I finally arrived at Kasagi Station in southern Kyōto Prefecture around 9:45 am that I was finally able to duck into the bathroom there and take my Tresiba shot.

I could have taken the Tresiba on the train, but I figured, the fewer shots through my jeans into my leg, the better. So I waited. Unfortunately, the doughnut and the lack of exercise afterwards (just sitting in the seat another hour or so) meant I was high, 259.

I took a corrective unit of Humalog and began my hike along the Kizugawa River. I knew walking would bring me down.

By noon I was 108. And I had a bit of glucose since I felt I was still dropping a bit. Lunch was soon afterwards: at a dramatic spot amid cacophonous rapids on the Nunome River, beside some natural potholes in the rocks, I had another convenience store food lunch. I held off on the Humalog for it until after finishing eating: an exercise/meal technique.

For the rest of the day, my BG was pretty much between about 90 and 110, thanks to frequent checking with my CGM and the occasional ingestion of some glucose powder.

The train I took to my hotel was stopped by a fallen tree. After the driver jumped out and (literally!) cut the tree branches with a big knife to let us continue, I got to my hotel. I’d walked a total of over 17,000 steps all day, much of it up and down inclines.

It was only at about 6:00 pm that my BG suddenly gave way and dropped; it hit 69 until the glucose I had kicked in and it went back up.

Dinner was in the room (third convenience store meal of the day). It was a complicated meal, including rice and other stuff, and I took two separate shots for it – one before and one after I was nearly finished.

BG went up to about 220 but soon went back down; it was right around 100 even all night.

Complicated dinner vs. lots of walking and some, if I may say so, deft dosing and timing of shots. It all worked out, I’m glad to say. And set the scene for the next day’s adventure on the Iga Railway.
