BGs on a day walking around Okaya, Japan
This declining city is weird and proud of it • Okaya, Japan

An odd start to today led to some high blood sugars, and walking brought them down, but not fast enough for my taste.
After a later-than-usual arrival into Okaya on Japan’s longest-scheduled local train ride yesterday, I went to sleep early, rather tired. At 3:00 am my CGM awoke me with a low BG, so I had a bit of glucose and went back to sleep.

The breakfast room
BG was fine after that until around 7:00 am. It began rising, even as I was still sleeping. By the time I woke up at 8:00 it was already 175 and edging higher.
The breakfast buffet in Okaya Central Hotel was surprisingly extensive. The hotel itself is older and run-down, and there weren’t a huge number of people staying in it. But the food selection was impressive, and the facilities were cozy but exquisite.

And this isn’t even everything
Unfortunately, I did not leave the hotel for a walk after my meal. And that always spells trouble. Exercise immediately after breakfast can do wonders for BG. Or at the very least, help them a lot.
So by 9:00 I was 222, and all I could do was keep an eye on it as it drifted up over 250. I spent the morning researching Okaya but also the next leg of my trip across Honshū on local trains.
Around noon I headed out to find lunch, BG having just finally crept to below 200. I had soba noodles at a place near the station, a small and friendly little joint where the tempura soba was, like the hotel breakfast, surprisingly tasty.
Around 1:00 pm I began exploring Okaya for real. BG was in the low to mid 100s for much of the walk (and drone flight!). So if you see this video, you’re seeing a T1D recovering from some highs but enjoying good readings at the moment.

Back in my hotel room later, to eat the dorayaki snack I’d purchased from a vending machine with my two cups of free coffee from the lobby, I was 120.
The dorayaki had about 30 grams of carbs, and I shot up Humalog for it and ate. BG peaked afterward at around 220 briefly but soon went back down.

At dinner, which was from a convenience store, I was back to where I wanted to be: 124. The dinner spiked me briefly to 259, and overall I must admit that BG was a little too up-and-down today for my liking.
Blame it on the breakfast. As usual.
