BGs on a day walking around Maizuru

I spent the morning walking around the Maizuru Port area in northern Kyōto Prefecture, Japan. Actually, the walk coincided with the day’s worst blood sugars. They went from high to normal over the course of the time I was recording. If you watch the video, see if you can see a brightening of mood as the video goes on.

I woke up in my hotel and had the breakfast buffet downstairs around 7:30. No need to actually get up early; I just have fallen into that habit on this trip thanks to the train schedules.

Breakfast was good and the atmosphere was great, a sunny window and few people. Unfortunately, since I knew I’d be out walking around, exploring and recording video, I didn’t immediately leave the hotel after eating.

Cue the post-breakfast BG spike.

By 8:45 am I was around 250, according to my CGM. Sighing, I took a couple units of Humalog and went outside to wander the streets.

Maizuru Port

The town was nice, and despite the diabetes woes, I was in a good and chipper mood. But it has been a busy trip already, and even my so-called days off are filled with research and planning and long hours.

That means that today I was well-rested but in a rather worn out frame of mind, not bursting with energy. And that meant that a high BG was more difficult to bring down.

I made it out to the port area, and then wandered back through town a while. I finished up the video in front of the station and got a quick lunch at a nearby convenience store to eat in my hotel room.

Lunch from 7-11

After all this walking, and the corrective insulin I’d taken, I was still 167. It had slowly trended down over my walk, but not dramatically so. I chalk that up to the general tiredness I’ve been feeling.

Still, 167 isn’t a disaster, and after a lunch shot and my small meal, I was down to 92 by the mid-afternoon, a bit too low too fast. I had a bit of glucose to bolster it, but overdid it. 222. I had a shot and a coffee-and-big-cookie snack.

At dinner time I was back to 112, and I went down to the same place as the breakfast buffet (which morphs into a full regular restaurant/cafe in the daytime and evenings). I had the day’s special, pasta with pesto sauce, and took a nice big shot for it.

Lovely dinner at the hotel cafe.

Too big. From 10:30 pm until about 12:30 am, I couldn’t fix my slight lowness, hovering around 70 despite eating carbs and checking frequently. It was unpleasant. A fitting end to a day of too many ups and downs.

Blame the pace of the trip. Still, it wasn’t crazily out of hand, and besides I enjoyed the walk around Maizuru anyway.
