High blood sugar challenge on the Imazu Line

The last thing that happened after two hours of persistent lows last night was that finally – FINALLY – my blood sugar rose. So I could sleep.

Actually it was 211, and so I’d overdone the corrections. (Understandably, since nothing was working to get me out of the 60s.) I took a couple corrective units of Humalog and went to sleep.

That last shot did nothing. My CGM in the morning showed I’d only risen from then, slowly and steadily. At 8:00 am I was 286.

I took four units, then went downstairs to the hotel buffet breakfast and had more insulin at my table, through my jeans, once I’d made a plate for myself.

I must say, I did well. As I went to explore the pleasant and cheerful Hankyū Imazu train line north of Kōbe, my BG glided down to the mid 100s. But no further.

Lunch was at a convenience store in their “eat-in space”, a nice dedicated second-floor room with clean tables and chairs and a view over the train tracks themselves.

By this time I felt low, and although it was only about 108, I was nervous. I took no insulin at all for my sandwich, bag of chips, and small chocolate bar, until *after* I finished eating. Then I took a mere two units, far less than the carbs would suggest.

After that I walked a couple kilometers to a place where you can watch Shinkansen trains whiz past.

That dose also turned out to be well-chosen. I spiked up to about 180 but then came back down to around 80 by dinner time.

So, all in all, today was a day of a bad start and some good dosing on my part, to go along with the many steps I got while walking around all day. Can’t change the past, all you can do is try to get a better blood sugar for the future.
