BG report: Walking around Matsusaka, Japan

Today I walked around the city of Matsusaka, Japan for several hours in the morning. Because I’d walked even more the day before, my legs were a bit wobbly so I tried to keep it simple. Still, it was enough movement that I knew my blood sugar would be trending towards the low rather than the high.

Not at first though. While I was 139 at 8:00 am when I woke up, after my breakfast at the hotel buffet I was 228. That could have been a post-meal spike, but I suspected it was a bit more.

The not-infrequent post-breakfast high.

Indeed, after I checked out and went walking a bit, I hit my peak: 250. All in all, I thought this was all right since I was still strolling all around the town, checking out the residential streets, the Shōwa-era shopping districts, and some remarkable and gorgeous temples.

Sure enough, an hour later I was down to 149, and still gliding lower and lower.

Not long after that, I was standing on top of the ancient castle ruins grounds. My BG was now 115, and I decided to eat a bit of glucose. It got down to 89 before bouncing back a bit higher to where I wanted it.

By the time I bought my Matsusaka beef ekiben and got onto my Kintetsu limited express train back to Ōsaka, I was 132. The carbs were printed on the bento packaging – about 100 grams. I took ten units of Humalog and ate the whole thing, rice and all.

For the rest of the day – the train ride home, through dinner and through the entire night – I was right around 100 thanks to some deft insulin dosing and some nudging with glucose when it started to go down.

The walking around Matsusaka had been enough to make BG control much better. And it was a great look at a city that had always been mysterious to me.
