BG Report: Walking around southeastern Stockholm

Today was the final full day in Scandinavia. Over three weeks, we’d seen some of the most amazing things on Earth, especially up in the furthest reaches of northern Norway. Today was a day of gathering our wits and preparing to fly to the United States.

I spent much of the morning walking around the islands of southeastern Stockholm. It was a sunny day and a glorious day to be outside in mid-October.

My first blood sugar reading of the day unfortunately, was a tad high: 200. Still, the huge buffet in the Mälardrottningen, the moored boat that contained our hotel room for the night, was superb; it just required a large shot of Humalog.

After that I began the walk, knowing that such a walk would also help with blood sugar control. I wandered the islands and the well-maintained roads, looking at the imposing architecture and the golden leaves. As I climbed up a hill to get a lookout over the water to another part of the city, I sat on a bench and checked: it was 70, which felt low in these circumstances.

I had some granola bars I had with me, and continued walking. Later on, I found lunch at an outdoor stall: a hot sandwich with a bottle of water. Watching the people walking or jogging by on the path, with the sunlight sparkling on the water, was really heaven.

So enthused was I about all this that I didn’t even bother checking my blood sugar again until dinner time, after 7 pm. I just knew it was ok. And it was; at that time, I was 146. We went to Cafe Sten Sture for dinner, a basement-level real medieval dungeon turned restaurant that we ate at on a 2014 trip. I had Swedish meatballs, a fitting goodbye to one of the world’s great cities.

Before bed (actually around 11 pm) I was 195 – a tad high, but where I wanted it for before sleeping. A fantastic final day, overall, in Stockholm and in Sweden!
